Cembal d’amour

Cembal d’amour is a special clavichord created in 1721 by the famous German instrument maker Gottfried Silbermann (1683-1753), which was ordered by the Estonian composer, musician and poetess Regina Gertrud König (Schwartz) (1690-..).
The original instrument has not survived, only two drawings (J. Matheson) and descriptions of the instrument remain. A few cembal d’amoures have been built in modern times, but the first historically faithful copy based on the original drawing is known to have been built by Lyndon Johann Taylor in the USA in the 1990s. The author of this instrument, commissioned by Taavi Kerikmäe in 2024, is Kaspars Putrinš. It is also known to be the only authentic cembal d’amour in Europe.
